Kinja'd!!!

In some preliminary shopping to replace the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , my wife has decided that the Ford Focus is “really cute”. What’s the status on the transmission recall stuff? Have they mostly been fixed? Did they end up just replacing a lot of them? I know I can just ask and look at service records to confirm, but I just want a rough idea of how common the problem still is. Thanks in advance

She did in fact think the 2nd gen 3 was cute, so I’m trying to steer her more in that direction.

The generation that started in 2004 was based on the same platform as the Focus and the Volvo S40. Then they all added their own engines and transmissions. Of the 3 Mazda was the best IMHO. Even the 2.0L mazda is pep py and fun to drive.

Unfortunately that's out of the cards for both price and unwillingness to daily a manual.

They have not fixed the issue. Even with flashed firmwares and/or replaced transmissions the problem can still reoccur .

It’s a bad, lazy transmission even when it’s working properly. Ford ruined an otherwise great car.

Iirc they switched to a wet clutch design mid ‘16. My girlfriend has an ‘18 and does have a 1-2 stutter sometimes but in the owners  manual that’s always been stated as normal. She doesn’t have any issues though. I’d avoid any one of them before ‘17 tbh

Stay away, I drove one for work years ago, I started in the winter so I thought it was just traction control kicking in and then it got nice out and it was still super jerky, only had 25k (admittedly hard) miles on it.

I the issue affects 100% of the cars with that transmission. I have one. Either its not that bad or it hasn’ t gotten that bad yet. Its slow going in and out of first ans second. I get some chatter sometimes but its more an an annoyance than anything.
